While we are not meeting together, we are moving forward. Sandra Vazquez and the Scholarship Committee have been communicating and sharing information about those 21 applicants for our scholarship/Grants in Aid. A decision was made, and I’d like to announce our two scholarship recipients of $600.00 awards.
Debra Kuski~ Thunder Valley K-8, Academic Interventionist. Debra is expecting to graduate in December 2021 from CU Denver's Master's in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education program.

As individuals, we try to understand the other side’s point of view, even if we don’t agree with it. In politics, we support principles that bring us together rather than divide us.
From our board of directors to our staff, workshop participants, and funding sources, we are evenly split between liberals and conservatives. BRANDON SHAFFER, former Colorado State Senator and past president of the senate presented at the October 5th meeting. Senator Shaffer is now employed at SVVSD and presented about the P-Tech Program in SVVSD Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1000 15th Ave., Longmont, Colorado.
"We want P-Tech available to all." (IBM)
P-TECH was originated and promoted by IBM. There are 60 schools in the USA, Australia--Colorado, New york, Maryland Connecticut, Rhode Island--all over the world. The program begins in the 9th grade of high school and for those who complete the program, the result is an Associates degree in Computer Information Systems. It is an early college high school that incorporates "real-world work experiences through internships and mentorships." The Hub of P-TECH is an the Innovation Technology Center and the "spokes" are at various high schools. The P-TECH program in St. Vrain is mainly at Skyline high school with variations of the program at Silver Creek, Erie, Frederick, and Longmont high schools. Students may stay in the program up to year 14 of schooling or 2 years post high school. Some complete earlier. The seed is planted in the Dreamer Program at Trail Ridge and Heritage middle schools and students begin the program in their freshman year. The P-Tech program was legislated in 2015 via HB15-1270. IBM invited St. Vrain to participate in 2013 and the planning began. The program has 50 students enrolled at Skyline high school. It is partially funded by the College Opportunity Fund (reduced college tuition) extended to 14 years of schooling.
Brandon also presented on the new suggested changes to PERA and informed chapter members about issues coming up in the Colorado legislature that will affect education in our state. When Brandon completed his presentation, our members were well informed about these issues and programs . Many questions were asked and answered, and as always, we enjoyed having Mr. Shaffer as our guest speaker.
Then, Senator Shaffer, received the Colorado Omega State DKG Lawmaker Award in Denver in 2012. He received a framed plaque with the citation as Lawmaker of the Year. This is awarded to lawmakers who have successfully introduced and sponsored bills that address educational issues. (Posted 10-6-2017)
Molly Fredrich, kindergarten teacher at Central Elementary, is a first year teacher in the district and is our Mu Chapter 2017 Adopt -A- Classroom Teacher. Adopt-A-Classroom was begun in Mu Chapter in 2010 and has continued to assist a new recipient each year.
Our chapter will be assisting her with classroom supplies, service hours, gift cards, and other items to make
a first-year SVVSD teacher feel supported.
Molly reported, "The beginning of the school year is going well and fast! I have 26 Kindergarten students in my class and am enjoying getting to know each one of them. My days are filled with laughter, learning, and tying shoes :)
love Central and the staff members are all wonderful. Kirsten Sampson is an amazing teacher partner, and I feel blessed to be teaching with her. Parent- teacher conferences are coming up these next two weeks so we will stay busy in October, and our students are excited as we are taking a field trip to the pumpkin patch :)"
Mu Chapter is thrilled to have Molly as our 2017 recipient. (Posted 10-8-2017)

A PotLuck was enjoyed by all and Gail Fray and Vivian Bray, Music, Arts, and Humanities Co-Chairs led us in song, plus president Susan Burnett had prepared a DKG Jeopardy game for us to test our knowledge. Questions that involved numbers were not answered correctly as often as the questions that involved issues, items, and people. Several of our full-time employees shared what is going on in their classrooms and what is one special goal they have for the year. Pictured left to right: Sandra Vazquez, district literacy coordinator; Sharon Bonner, literacy liaison at Timberline K-8; Lindsey Cook, Language Arts at Sunset M.S.; Katie Schmitt, Orchestra Teacher at Mead High School; Cheryl Barnett, immediate past president; Susan Burnett, president; Susan with the Jeopardy Board; Gail Fray, playing piano; and some of our members singing the DKG Song and "Hand in Hand." We will be visiting her classroom and taking supplies, volunteering, and offering any help we can give. (Posted 9-15-2017) |
